Game report

James Whyte’s double and Ned Wagner’s header lifted NY Shamrocks S.C to a 3-1 victory over Doxa S.C at St. Michael’s Playground on Saturday night.

Kareem Joachim netted Doxa’s lone goal with a 75th-minute spot kick.

The Greek-American team remains winless in three outings and is placed eighth in the table. Shamrocks on the other hand mounts from sixth to third spot with a 2-2-0 record.

Whyte scored the opener for the home team as he intercepted a pass in Doxa’s own box before slotting the ball low and hard away from keeper Kern Griffith in the 21st minute.

The Rocks doubled their lead 15 minutes inside the second half as Wagner headed Sean Reilly’s free-kick in the net from the top of the 18. Keeper Griffith had come off his line but was unable to get a hand on Reilly’s free-kick.

Kevin Grogan’s men levelled up to three goals through Whyte’s second goal in the 72nd minute. The Irish forward started his own goal, switching the ball from the left flank to Ryan Matthews on the right. Whyte then made a run in the box; Matthews found him with a cross that the 26-year-old directed in the net with an awkward touch--perhaps a miscontrol.

Two minutes later Doxa was rewarded a penalty kick for a foul on Patrick Alvarez in the box.

Joachim converted from 12 yards, picking the low left corner of the net with 15 minutes to go.

Three key notes

1. He might be Whyte but he’s red hot: Rocks new signing James Whyte leads the league in scoring, tallying six goals in four games.

2. The broken Rock still got the job done: Shamrocks were without three key payers due to injuries: Kwesi Mills-Odoi, Charles O’Loughlin and Serigne Kasse.

3. Two straight unsafe travels: Before playing the Manning State Cup finalists, Shamrocks, away from home, Doxa traveled to the CSL champions NY Greeks American’s turf last week, a game they lost 1-0.
